Park Alerts ( 7 Alerts )

  • DAMAGE TO KLEINHANS AQUEDUCT:  Recent heavy rains and flash flooding has damaged Kleinhans aqueduct in Williams Township, Northampton County.  On Saturday, August 11, 2018 Fry's Run overtopped it's banks damaging the aqueduct and washing away the temporary bypass that carries water through the canal.  Currently, there is no water flow from Theadore Roosevelt Recreation Area to Durham, and low water flow from Durham south.  We anticipate making temporary repairs and installing another bypass at the aqueduct next week, and hope to have water flowing by the end of the week.  Please contact the park office for additional information.

  • TRAIL CLOSURE:  The towpath will be closed in the area of I-95, Scudder Falls Bridge, starting on July 30, 2018 to August 31, 2018.  The closure will be in effect from Monday through Saturday during this time period.  The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) will be performing work on the I-95 bridge over the canal during this closure.  For additional information please visit the DRJTBC website at www.drjtbc.org/project/scudder-falls or you can contact the park office at 610-982-5560.

  • Trail Construction Notice -- Construction has begun on opening up one of our remaining three major trail obstructions along the canal. Contractors have begun work at the site known as the Conrail embankment, located 1 mile south of Bridge Street in Morrisville. The towpath on both north and south sides of the embankment will be closed due to this construction for the foreseeable future, as contractors prepare to tunnel through the embankment.

Once completed, towpath users will once again be able to safely traverse through this segment of the canal towpath for the first time in decades.

  • TRAIL CLOSURE---A construction project has begun on the replacement of the Phillips Mill bridge in Solebury Township.   As a result of this project the towpath will be closed between Lower Limeport Bridge and the pedestrian bridge at Canal Park in Solebury Township.  The trail closure will begin on Monday, April 16, 2018 and will remain in effect until the project is completed. Thru-travelers may exit the towpath at Lower Limeport bridge (Hal Clark Park) onto River Road and re-enter via the Malcom Crooks bridge in Canal Park, Solebury Twp ( and vice versa).  This closure is for public safety due to heavy machinery and vehicles that will be accessing the bridge via the towpath.

  • Seasons and Hours: Contrary to the information on Google, Pennsylvania state parks are open every day of the year. Day use areas close at dusk. Park offices are open specific hours. Pools, beaches, and campgrounds are open specific seasons.

  • Drone Restrictions: To protect park resources, limit conflict with other park users, and avoid safety and privacy liabilities, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), remotely piloted vehicles (RPV) or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), all commonly referred to as DRONES, are only permitted on designated flying fields in six remote controlled airfield parks (Beltsville, Benjamin Rush, Hillman, Lackawanna, Prompton, and Tuscarora). Drones are only permitted in other PA State Parks in very limited circumstances which require a special use permit.

  • General Firewood Quarantine: Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has enacted a quarantine order for untreated firewood of any kind coming into the state. Any firewood brought into the state must be kiln dried, heat treated, fumigated, and/or USDA Certified.

To protect the high quality and native character of our State Parks from exotic invasive species DCNR highly encourages all visitors to:

    • burn/buy locally cut firewood (within 25 miles)

    • BURN ALL firewood brought from another area. Do not leave it. Do not take it with you.

    • Encourage friends and neighbors not to move firewood

    • Do not remove firewood from a Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Area. Contact the PA Department of Agriculture, www.agriculture.pa.gov and search on the keyword Spotted Lantern Fly for current quarantine information.
